Here’s a great little backyard beauty. It doesn’t have a lot of square footage on the ground level, but it makes up for it above(!) In the attic room of this gambrel shaped roof is a 12′ wide room that runs the length of the building. It’s 7′ ceiling height is more than adequate to accommodate your man cave and all its furnishings. We typically install stairways with landings so that the top of the stairs hits somewhere near the middle of the room.
Putting rooms up in attic trusses isn’t necessarily the most economical way to gain extra square footage, but the designs of these style buildings make BOLD statements!!! And they’re really cool looking 😉 A typical sized attic room ranges somewhere between 10′ and 14′ wide. We can usually get at least a 7′ high room out of the truss design and even 8′ often times. 2′ o/c is typically the spacing of these types of trusses as opposed to 4′ on center for a standard non-attic style truss. 3/4″ Tongue and Groove sub-flooring is installed to provide a solid base to walk around on. With the gambrel attic design, the room will be squared off at the ceiling corners and easily finished off with insulation and drywall.
Three 9′ wide x 8′ high steel overhead doors provide access from both gable ends. The pair of 36″ x 44″ Single hung windows in the attic gables provide some light and ventilation. We poured a 4″ concrete floor inside (not shown) and added 5″ seamless aluminum gutters and downspouts to channel the water away. A true backyard classic.
