This 30′ x 32′ building is called a Gambrel Attic. Gambrel describes the shape. This roof design is also called Dutch style or barn style. The steeper pitch is usually pretty dramatic to get the height of the attic room inside up to a height that you can walk around in. 7′ or 8′ of ceiling height is what we shoot for. Gambrel attic style buildings definitely increase the cost, but if space is an issue it’s a great way to get extra storage space. Attic room widths are typically 10′, 12′ or 14′ depending on the design and span of the truss.
This building has 2 – 8′ x 8′ garage doors and 2 entry doors. It’s unique in that it has an exterior set of stairs to reach the attic room. It’s more cost effective to run the stairs from the inside of the building, but every customer’s needs are different and this one didn’t want to lose any storage space from the inside – so we built them on the outside using pressure treated lumber.
